Discover Ella: A Serene Mountain Town in Sri Lanka and beyond
Ella is a charming hill town nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Known for its breathtaking scenery, rolling tea plantations, and relaxed atmosphere, Ella is a must-stop for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking a more laid-back vibe during their trip across Sri Lanka
In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know to plan your visit to Ella. From its spectacular train rides, top attractions and scenic hikes to where to stay, how to get there, and the best spots to eat! We’ve got you covered during your journey in Sri Lanka

1. Nine Arches Bridge
In the deep lush hills of Ella, the Nine Arches Bridge is one of Sri Lanka’s most photogenic landmarks. It was built during the British colonial period entirely from stone and bricks, it gracefully spans a deep green gorge, connecting two hillsides wrapped in tea plantations. What makes it truly magical is the sight of a vintage train slowly crossing the bridge, framed by dense jungle and morning mist.
We recommend setting out early, in order to catch a train passing by the bridge. Locals often know the train schedule better than Google, so don’t hesitate to ask your guesthouse or a tuk-tuk driver. You can either walk from Ella town in about 20 minutes via a scenic forest path or hop in a tuk-tuk for a quick 10-minute ride. The site itself is completely free to visit, but don’t forget comfortable shoes—the path can be muddy after rain.

2. Little Adam’s Peak
For a short but unforgettable adventure, Little Adam’s Peak offers one of the best panoramic views in Ella with relatively little effort. Starting near the 98 Acres Resort, the trail winds its way through manicured tea plantations, dotted with workers harvesting leaves by hand, a sight that captures the essence of the hill country. The path is well-trodden and suitable for all fitness levels, making it ideal if you want to catch a beautiful view without a long, strenuous hike.
It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos, which you will! The summit rewards you with sweeping views over Ella Gap and the surrounding valleys.
We personally loved coming here a bit early in the morning, when the horizon turns golden and the air is still crisp. Sunset should also be magical, though expect more people at that time. Bring water, and if you're doing it in the early morning or late afternoon, a light jacket is useful too.

3. Diyaluma Falls
Diyaluma Falls isn’t just a waterfall, it’s a full-day adventure and one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have around Ella. Standing at 220 meters, it’s the second tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, and its upper tiers form a series of natural rock pools perfect for swimming and soaking in panoramic valley views. The feeling of being perched on the edge of a cliffside infinity pool is simply unforgettable.
The best way to get there is to take the train to Haputale and hire a local tuk-tuk driver for the day. Many of them wait just outside the station, offering full-day tours that also include stops at Lipton’s Seat and other scenic spots. We took a round trip from Haputale train station, with several stops, and it costs us around $20 USD.
Ask the driver to take you to the upper falls first, this is where the pools are. The hike from the parking area to the top takes about 30–40 minutes through forested paths. Wear shoes with grip, bring a towel, and go early to avoid crowds. You can finish the day by driving down to the lower falls for another breathtaking viewpoint.

4. Lipton’s Seat (Tea Plantation)
Perched high above the tea-carpeted hills of Haputale, Lipton’s Seat is a viewpoint steeped in history and one of our favorite stops in the region. This is where Sir Thomas Lipton, the founder of the Lipton Tea empire used to sit and survey his vast tea plantations, and once you arrive, it’s easy to see why. On a clear day, the view stretches as far as five different provinces of Sri Lanka, with rolling hills fading into the horizon.
Getting there is an adventure in itself. From Ella, take the train to Haputale, then grab a tuk-tuk to climb the winding roads through tea estates. Most drivers offer a package that includes a visit to Diyaluma Falls, which makes for a perfect day trip. Entry to the viewpoint is about $1 USD, and we highly recommend arriving early in the morning, before the clouds roll in and obscure the view.
You can also add a tour of a working tea factory nearby, your driver will likely have some great suggestions.

5. Scenic Train Ride from Kandy to Ella
Often hailed as the most beautiful train journey in the world, the ride from Kandy to Ella is a slow-moving window into Sri Lanka’s heartland. As the train snakes through rolling tea plantations, mist-draped forests, and sleepy villages, every curve reveals a new postcard-perfect scene. It’s not just a means of transportation, it’s an experience in itself.
The full ride takes around 6 to 7 hours, and prices vary from $2 to $12 USD depending on your chosen class. We strongly recommend booking a reserved seat in either 1st or 2nd class, especially during the high season, these can be secured in advance via 12Go Asia, or the official Sri Lanka Railways website, or through local travel agents.
If you’re after photos and views, sit on the right side of the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, then switch to the left side from there to Ella. Morning departures (around 8:30 AM from Kandy) offer the clearest views and gentlest light for photography.
We’ve done this route more than once, and every time feels like stepping into a dream, watching schoolchildren wave as you pass, sipping chai with locals in the dining carriage, or just leaning out the doorway with the wind in your face. It’s slow travel at its finest.

6. Ravana Falls
Crashing down from a height of 25 meters, Ravana Falls is one of the widest and most accessible waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Just a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from Ella, it’s a favorite stop for travelers and locals alike, especially during the dry season when water levels are lower, making it easier (and safer) to explore up close.
The falls are visible directly from the main road, which makes them an easy and spontaneous stop if you're touring the area. Adventurous visitors often climb over the rocks to get closer to the cascading water or even take a quick, refreshing dip in the lower pools but be cautious, especially after rainfall, when currents can be surprisingly strong. When we visited in mid-morning, there was a small crowd enjoying the view, but still enjoyable

7. Ravana’s Cave
A short hike from Ravana Falls leads you to Ravana Cave, a site shrouded in legend. Believed to be part of the epic Ramayana, the cave is said to have once been the hiding place of Princess Sita, held captive by the demon king Ravana. While the interior of the cave is quite small, the journey to reach it adds to the experience.
You’ll need to climb a series of stone steps, roughly 500 of them, so sturdy shoes are a must. Bring a flashlight or use your phone torch to explore inside, as the cave can be quite dark. The view from the entrance, however, is well worth the effort, offering a sweeping panorama of the Ella region.
This is one of those spots that feels more meaningful when you know the story behind it, so take a moment to read up on the legend beforehand

8. Tea Factory Visit (Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory)
Ella is surrounded by some of the most scenic tea plantations in the country, and a visit to a working tea factory is one of the best ways to connect with Sri Lanka’s tea legacy. Just a 15-minute drive from town, the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory offers guided tours that walk you through the entire production process, from plucking to drying to tasting.
We found the tour surprisingly engaging, with knowledgeable guides explaining how subtle changes in weather, elevation, and processing techniques impact the flavor of each tea variety. The tour costs around $5 USD, runs daily between 8 AM and 5 PM, and finishes with a tasting session where you can sample fresh brews right at the source.
There’s also a shop on site, perfect for picking up a few authentic souvenirs. Don’t rush this visit, it’s a relaxing and educational experience that pairs perfectly with a morning exploring the surrounding hills.

9. Dhowa Rock Temple
Six kilometers outside Ella, nestled quietly along the Badulla road, lies Dowa Temple, a 2,000-year-old rock temple that remains one of the area’s lesser-known gems. Carved directly into the cliff face, the temple houses an impressive standing Buddha figure etched into the rock, along with several ancient paintings and chambers within the cave itself.
Entrance is free, though small donations are appreciated. The temple isn’t overly touristic, making it an ideal stop if you’re seeking a quieter, more contemplative moment during your trip. we suggest visiting in the morning, when the area is serene and the soft light enhances the beauty of the rock carvings.
Modest clothing is required, so be sure to cover shoulders and knees , scarves or sarongs are usually available at the entrance if needed. You can easily combine this visit with Ravana Falls or other nearby sites on a half-day tuk-tuk loop.

10. Chill at Café Chill
Right in the heart of Ella’s small town center, Café Chill is more than just a place to eat, it’s a social hub for travelers from around the world. With its laid-back vibe, wooden furniture, and open-air design, it’s the kind of spot where you come for lunch and end up staying through sunset. The menu offers something for everyone, from spicy rice & curry to burgers, smoothie bowls, and cocktails.
Prices are very reasonable, with meals ranging from $3 to $10 USD, and portions are generous. we recommend arriving a bit early in the evening if you want to snag a seat on the upper deck, which has cozy lounge-style cushions and a great view of the bustling street below.
Café Chill is the place to relax, recharge, and connect.
