How to Get to the Trailhead from Karakol town

To reach the starting point of your trek to Ala-Kul Lake, you’ll need to get to the entrance of Karakol National Park. The easiest way is to take Marshrutka 101, a local minibus service. You can catch it from several routes in Karakol, including Zhamansariev Str. – Toktogula – Lenin St. – Kapacaeba – Masaliev Str. The ride costs 10 KGS (≈ $0.11 USD) and takes you directly to the park entrance.

The marshrutka operates from early morning (around 7:00 AM) to late afternoon (last bus around 5:00 PM), but the exact times may vary, so it’s recommended to check ahead.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi for a more direct and flexible option.

Once you arrive at the park entrance, there is a small entrance fee of 100 KGS (≈ $1.10 USD), which you’ll need to pay to the park guard.

From here, you can begin your hike or hitchhike closer to the first bridge to save time and energy for the main ascent.

🚗 Hitchhiking is very popular in Kyrgyzstan, even among locals. If you don't want to add extra kilometers to your trek, you can try to hitchhike from the park entrance as close as possible to the first bridge. Many locals are used to picking up travelers, and this can save you some time and energy

Day 1: Karakol Valley to Sirota Camp

  • Distance: ~14 km

  • Duration: 6-7 hours

  • Elevation Gain: ~1,000 meters

  • Difficulty: Moderate

The trek begins in Karakol Gorge, where the well-marked trail leads you through dense forests, following the winding path of the Karakol River.  After approximately two hours of hiking or few minutes in hitchhiking, you’ll reach on the right the first wooden bridge as it is called among Ala-Kul hikers - there is a new bridge constructed before this "first bridge", don't cross it, it is just made for villagers around -

Beyond the "first bridge", the terrain becomes noticeably steeper, as the trail weaves through lush meadows adorned with vibrant wildflowers. The climb is gradual, with occasional openings that reveal panoramic views of the valley below, rewarding your effort with breathtaking scenery.

After another couple of hours, you’ll encounter on the right a second narrow bridge spanning a fast-flowing section of the river. At this point, the trail becomes rockier, requiring careful footing as you continue your steady climb toward Sirota Camp. This sheltered camp lies in a beautiful valley, surrounded by towering cliffs, offering a peaceful resting spot before the bigger ascent on the following day.

Sirota Camp is a popular resting and camping spot, offering a clearing where you can pitch your tent or opt for yurt accommodation. The cost for a yurt is around 3500-4000 KGS per person (≈ $40-45 USD), which includes dinner and breakfast for the following day. During high season, it’s advisable to book your yurt in advance through your hostel in Karakol. Payment is made in cash upon arrival.

Day 2 : Sirota Camp to Ala-Kul Lake

  • Distance: ~6 km

  • Duration: 4-5 hours

  • Elevation Gain: ~900 meters

  • Difficulty: Challenging

Day 2 presents the most demanding section of the trek, but it’s equally rewarding. The trail begins with a steep climb through dense pine forests before transitioning into rocky switchbacks. As you ascend, the forest thins, revealing stunning views of the valley below. The path becomes uneven with loose rocks, requiring careful footing.

After about two hours of strenuous climbing, you’ll break through the treeline into an alpine landscape, and this is the challenging part of the hike. The temperature drops, and the effects of the altitude may start to show.

The final stretch to Ala-Kul Lake is a challenging zigzag climb up a scree slope, testing your endurance.

As you reach the ridge, the stunning Ala-Kul Lake appears, turquoise waters framed by jagged peaks and snow-capped mountains, offering an otherworldly view.

Camping near the lake is popular, though the cold and strong winds can make it uncomfortable. Be sure to have a warm sleeping bag and wind-resistant tent. Alternatively, you can continue to Keldike Valley, which offers a more sheltered campsite.

If you prefer yurt accommodation, it’s available near the lake for 3500-4500 KGS (≈ $40-$50 USD), including meals. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak season, through your Hostel in Karakol

Day 3: Ala-Kul Lake to Altyn Arashan (via Ala-Kul Pass)

  • Distance: ~14 km

  • Duration: 7-8 hours

  • Elevation Gain: ~400 meters (pass)

  • Elevation Loss: ~1,400 meters

  • Difficulty: Very challenging

Day 3 begins with an early ascent to Ala-Kul Pass (3,900m), the highest point of the trek. The climb is steep and strenuous, often covered in snow even in summer. The path consists of loose scree and ice patches, making each step important for stability. As you ascend, the panoramic views of the jagged peaks of the Terskey Alatau range grow more breathtaking with every step.

Reaching the summit of Ala-Kul Pass is a moment of triumph. From the top, you’ll get an awe-inspiring view of Ala-Kul Lake from above—an isolated, stunning turquoise expanse. However, the descent that follows is even more demanding. The trail is steep and rocky, with loose gravel and sharp switchbacks. Trekking poles are highly recommended for better control and stability.

The landscape transitions as you descend into Keldike Valley, where the barren, rocky terrain gradually gives way to lush green meadows and small streams meandering through fields of wildflowers. The warmer air and increased oxygen levels make for a more pleasant environment.

After several hours of descent, you’ll reach the serene Altyn Arashan Valley, famous for its natural hot springs. Here, many trekkers unwind by soaking in the thermal pools (150-300 KGS / $1.70-$3.50 USD), a perfect way to soothe sore muscles. You can also find multiple yurt camps and guesthouses for an overnight stay if you prefer not to return to Karakol immediately (which you can do actually using a Marshrutka or taxi)

Day 4: Altyn Arashan to Karakol

  • Distance: ~15 km

  • Hiking Time: ~4-5 hours (or take transport)

  • Elevation Loss: ~700 m

  • Difficulty: Easy (but long)

The final day begins with a walk along a dirt road that leads back to Karakol. While the trail itself is not particularly scenic, it offers an easy descent and a peaceful end to the trek. If you have the energy, walking the full 15 km is a nice way to stretch your legs after days of demanding climbs. However, if you’re tired or short on time, there are transport options available.

Transport Options:

  • Marshrutka 350: From Ak-Suu Village to Karakol for 35 KGS (~$0.40 USD).First bus: 07:15 AM
    Last bus: 17:00 PM

  • Taxi: A ride from Altyn Arashan to Karakol costs 2,000-3,000 KGS ($23-$35 USD), depending on negotiations.

  • Hitchhiking: A popular and easy option in Kyrgyzstan. You can often catch a ride back to Karakol.

This day is more relaxed, allowing you to reflect on the incredible adventure you’ve had. Whether you choose to walk or use transport, the end of the trek is near!
